Examples of Recordings from Vinyl LPs

All these recordings were made using a Linn Sondek LP12 turntable with Linn Lingo power supply, Linn Ittok pickup arm and Linn Karma moving coil cartridge. The phono preamp was a Naim 42.5 with 'K' input boards powered by a home-built power supply (named "The CatFlap", for the benefit of Naim inside-joke afficiandos). The output was captured at 16 bit/44.1kHz with an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI soundcard, and the recordings were processed with a variety of audio software, primarily Wave Repair and CoolEdit 2000.

All these files are encoded in the lossless FLAC format, at compression level 5.

• Asia: Heat of the Moment
  Most people will know this. It's the opening track from Asia's first album, and was a moderate hit.
• FM: Headroom
  Pretty obscure. FM were a Canadian space-rock band, and this is from the title track of a direct-to-disc LP they made (ie. it was cut straight to the acetate rather than being recorded on tape).
• Frank Ricotti All Stars: The Connection
  Theme music from the television series "The Biederbeck Tapes". (A sort of comedy-mystery-thriller, well worth seeing if you get the chance).
• Frankie Goes To Hollywood: Two Tribes
  A global mega-hit, of course. This is the version from the LP "Welcome to the Pleasuredome" rather than any of the numerous 12" single mixes.
• Gerry Rafferty: Baker Street
  People who've been living on Neptune may not know this. (People living on Mars will).
• Judie Tzuke: I Never Know Where My Heart Is
  From the album "I Am The Phoenix", which was fairly early (her second or third, I think).
• Patrick Moraz & Bill Bruford: Galatea
  From a delightful album called "Music for Piano and Drums" (which does exactly what it says on the tin).
• Tchaikovsky: Symphony 6, Movement 3
  Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Paul Kletzki, recorded by EMI in 1960.
• Visitor 2035 - Cassiopiea
  Another obscure Canadian band. As far as I'm aware, they only made one album (called "Visitor 2035").
